The Const. Neil Bruce Mural was born out of the School District 23 Equity Scan initiative that took place over the 2018-2019 school year. The initiative would see the implementation of additions to policy and curriculum that was intended to create equity within the school system for all indigenous students and to accomplish it through a syilx lens. As part of the initiative the school through Syilx Elders guidence the $ food Chiefs captikʷɬ was shared with the students.

As part of work as political leader for our Nation In was aware of the work that was undertaken. I created the 4 Food Chief images to adorn the pillars at the front entrance to express that the school was on syilx territories and to create a sense of belonging for our syilx students within the school. Each pillar was painted as a mentoring opportunity where I taught a few of our syilx students the basics of painting.
