Ki-low-na Friendship Society Mural Project

The beginning of 2019 the Ki-low-na Friendship Centre contacted me to express their interest in me creating a mural at the front of their building in downtown Kelowna. I worked with one of their staff to design the mural. Once we presented the design idea to some of the elderly clients that attend the centre's regular programming we began. The design had two Syilx Nation members added within it. Cassidy Marchand a young Okanagan Indian Band member and twi Emery Robins Sr. also a member of the Okanagan Indian Band, Emery was well known around the centre as every year he and his children, and their drum group would attend the yearly pow-pow to be host drum. Emery Sr had dedicated his life to teaching and mentoring numerous of our syilx youth and other indigenous youth in drumming. Emery Sr. was the nephew of my grandmother.

Though the duration of this project I had many staff members who would come outside to admire the wall and more often then none I would entice them to pick up a brush and assist, even if it was for just a moment. Dianne Shanon staff member assisted with the entire mural process. I wanted the staff to feel a personal connection and some ownership in the beautification of the building. We also had one young man who was homeless who stopped by everyday to watch, share stories of his experiences, and eventually he too helped paint alongside of us. It was a great experience to share with all involved.
