Squilxʷ Resilience - Kelowna Secondary School Mural
As part of the "Rethink 150: Indigenous Truth’s" initiatives on creating education surrounding indigenous issues from an indigenous lens the Kelowna Secondary School mural project with Syilx artist Sheldon Louis and KSS Honors 12 Art students began with Dixon Terbasket and Sheldon Louis engaging students in discussions on a number of histories and issues surrounding indigenous peoples. Grade 12 art students at Kelowna Senior Secondary have been hard at work on an intercultural mural. About 20 students from the honours art class have worked on sections of the massive mural for several months. The project received a community partnership grant through UBC Okanagan and the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Centre.
After completion the mural was exhibited at the FINA gallery at UBCO May 14-16, featured at the District First Nations Graduation ceremony at KSS on May 17th, and exhibited again at the end of June/beginning of July in the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art’s window space.
